Rasikh Journey: Facilitated Preparation Series

This fall, BMPC will host Rasikh Journey, a four-part virtual pre-conference preparation series designed to help participants enter BMPC2026 with historical grounding, spiritual intention, cultural humility, and practical readiness. The series will begin in October 2026 and will be open to registered participants as well as those who are still considering registration. This allows the broader BMPC community to learn more about the meaning, context, and responsibilities of the gathering before making final plans. The four sessions will guide participants through the central questions shaping BMPC2026:

• Session 1: Why We Gather in Senegal: | Dakar, Gorée Island, UCAD, the Black Muslim Atlantic, and the spiritual and political meaning of place.

• Session 2: Omar ibn Said, the Black Muslim Atlantic and the Work of Remembrance | Omar’s life, Fouta Toro, enslavement, Arabic literacy, spiritual endurance, and the Said Institute’s work of remembrance, reconnection, and reclamation.

• Session 3: SelebeYoon and Rasikh | Rootedness, care, accountability, non-extractive engagement, and healing-centered participation.

• Session 4: Know Before You Go: Travel, Culture, and Care | Practical preparation, including travel readiness, lodging guidance, packing, health, prayer, meals, cultural etiquette, Gorée expectations, and communication channels.

Reflection Guide

Registered participants will also receive a reflection guide rooted in the conference theme, Rasikh: What We Carry Forward, and the Said Institute pillars of Remembrance, Reconnection, and Reclamation. These weekly reflections and prompts will help participants engage the histories, questions, and responsibilities shaping this gathering, including Black Muslim memory, Omar ibn Said’s legacy, the Black Atlantic, faith, healing, return, and relational accountability.

This preparation process is meant to support thoughtful participation, not academic performance. Participants will be invited to read, reflect, ask questions, journal, pray, listen, and consider what they are carrying into the gathering — and what they may be called to carry forward afterward. The goal is to help each participant arrive with greater context, humility, curiosity, reverence, and care, ready to enter BMPC2026 as part of a shared circle of intellectual, relational, and spiritual inquiry.
